The following contains spoilers for Only Murders in the Building season 4, episode 9, “Escape from Planet Klongo.”Only Murders in the Building showrunner, John Hoffman, discusses Paul Rudd’s fate after his character, Glen Stubbins, is seemingly killed off by the same killer who murdered Sazz Pataki. Rudd has a record three deaths on the show, with his first character, Ben Glenroy, being poisoned at the end of season 2. However, he survived but died after being pushed into an elevator shaft in the season 3 premiere. Rudd returned to portray Ben’s stuntman Glen, who falls into a coma after being shot. In season 4, episode 9, Glen is suffocated to death when Sazz’s killer arrives at the hospital after waking up.
In a recent interview with TheWrap, Hoffman explained that Glen’s death is “a little bit of an homage” to the actor’s long-running prank on talk show host Conan O’Brien, where Rudd would always play the same clip from his 1988’s Mac and Me while pretending to promote his new movie. That was a welcome thing. If you know Paul Rudd, he likes his repetition. So it’s in line and a little bit of an homage to Paul Rudd in the very same vein as his running gag with Conan O’Brien playing the same clip from his movie over and over again through past a decade now.

Rudd Could Be Back Again
Hoffman’s comment leaves Paul Rudd’s fate on an ominous note in Only Murders in the Building season 4. Throughout the show, Rudd has always managed to come back after his characters meet their seeming and definite demises. With this repetition paying homage to the actor’s prank on O’Brien, there’s a possibility that season 4 isn’t done surprising the audience either.

Could Paul Rudd Come Back?
Rudd’s characters have tricked viewers several times in Only Murders in the Building, so it’s hard to believe that Glen is really dead. While the nurse’s tears made his death a bit more convincing, there’s the haunting feeling that Rudd is not exactly off the show yet. This raises questions about whether he will return to Only Murders in the Building season 5, which has been renewed.
There’s also that lingering feeling that nudges me to double-check on Ben, particularly if his death could be faked. With repetition being a Rudd thing, it’s hard to rule out the possibility that he’d reappear in the show in a whole other way. After all, there are many tricks to bring him back if Only Murders in the Building is determined to keep him in the show. While Glen might be Marshall’s latest victim, there’s a high chance that Rudd isn’t.
